leaving Austin College
By Transfering, From Dallas
I was frastruted by the amount of classes my professor cancelled in a single semester. No student should be treated like this at any college. Students may tuition to sit in classrooms and learn, not receiving class cancelled emails.

Stay away if you want a solid education.
By Class of 2020 Kangaroo, From Sherman TX
Canceling classes by professors has become an epidemic at Austin College. I had a professor who canceled about 7 classes (it's about 25 percent of a full semester-long course) Not only not making up for all the canceled classes, the professor does not even acknowledge the inconveniences caused by those canceled classes. Overall, I wish that I went to another liberal arts college in Texas.

quality is not on par with other liberal arst colleges
By MyGrandpaDie-CantGo, From Dallas TX
I took classes at Austin College, community colleges, and online. As someone previously mentioned here, professor do cancel classes on an irregular basis, and most importantly, classes not prepared too, credit to the tenure system. Moreover, it used to be a student who loses his mother, grandmother, grandfather, uncle etc. in one semester. At Austin College, it's the professor, and the professor always have other things to do rather than teaching, oddly enough. But also has colleague die as often as a student would lose a relative, in addition to lots of meetings that are irrelevant to the field. I hope school would re-consider the tenure system or at least have policies in place so that professor is not always "not available to teach" while being a professor. Right now, so many people "die" and too often. It's an epidemic. College needs to do something.

Disappointed
By DisappointedKangaroo, From Sherman TX
School does not have a refund policy for cancelled classes while professor keep cancelling classes for various reason. No supervising policy on professor's attendance and no consequences for keeping cancelling classes. I am regretting paying the tuition and not able to take the classes that I paid for, and at the end not even receiving a refund. Most importantly, I am extremely disappointed that professor would keep cancelling classes at this institution.

Worried
By Class 20, From Sherman TX
I am worried that the school administration is so incompetent that the school will have to close its door within years. They do not know how to run a liberal arts college. I think they need a whole new administration team just to try to save the school from closing. So I can safely earn my diploma and not have to transfer to another school. Class size is getting bigger and bigger. Other liberal arts college make sure and guarantee that they maintain a student ratio of 1:10, not here at Austin College. I want a liberal arts education but I realize that I am not getting it. I am paying a premium for an average state school education, and I hope the school stays until I graduate.

I loved it here
By Class of 2019, From Houston, Texas
I am a 2019 graduate of AC. I loved my time here. Although the college has its faults and the administration isn't the best, the professors and classes made it worthwhile. The professors really care about your success, the writing center is amazing, and I met some of my best friends here. Sherman isn't exciting, but it's absolutely not as bad as people make it sound. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but when it fits it fits.

Stay Away
By Class of 2016, From Dallas TX
Austin College suppress any dissenting opinion. The college tells you what to do, what's right and wrong, why AC is a good college. If you disagree, they will work against you. College administrators are dictators of the 21st century. Education quality is far below the average; hire too many incompetent staff members; underpay the professors. Liberal arts college like Austin College are closing their doors. I think AC's closure is coming. If you do not want, after graduating, a diploma from a college that no longer exists, you should stay away. Southwestern and Trinity Uni are good liberal arts colleges in Texas

Life changing school
By Karly, class of 2020, From Dallas, Texas
I am so happy that I chose to study at AC. This is a place where you can feel cared about and recognized. All my professors know my name and generally care about teaching and the student instead of their own research. The campus is small enough that you will always know somebody in your class and I constantly seeing friends around campus. The curriculum is broad enough to that it's easy build new majors or graduate a semester or a year early. Also January terms are the most fun ways to learn and travel the world. Because of Austin college I already have a job lined up before college and lots of friends and memory to take with me!

Planning to Transfer ASAP
By RooOo, From Texas
The school's focus is not on its students. The school wants to survive for the sake of surviving. College administrators should commit not to cut any corner of the education students receive. If the college is not going to survive doing so, the. make the last graduating class count, not to cut corners to survive. The college's goal should be educating first surviving second. I root for a new president who is a professor. Otherwise, tick tock, tick tock. It's not funny, it's sad!

Possibly the End of the College
By Class of, From Dallas TX
The current president do not know how to manage a college, a liberal arts college in particular. Wrong people are in charge of the college. The institution, under the current president's leadership, values tenure over merit. On one hand, class size is steeply increasing, and professors are underpaid. On the other hand, AC, under the current leadership, employs too many administrators/VPs and drains the college's annual budget. It also causes the tuition to go up. As other liberal arts colleges focus on its students' and professors' successes and developments. At AC, college administrators' pocket is the focus.

AC is Sinking Fast under Current Administrators
By Class of XX, From sherman TX
The college is heading to a perilous direction as a liberal arts college. The current president has no explicit understanding of what a liberal arts education is and should offer. Activities and social life, I gave a one-star because, as seniors, they were pushed to live off-campus. So what is their social life and activities after classes when they are not even on campus and have limited access to the library, labs, tutors, etc. For City and Setting, I gave a four-star because it is not a great, energetic city, but it is not AC's fault. For Classes and Teachers, I have to give a one-star because class sizes are way above other liberal arts college, and the size is stilling increasing. As a result, it is physically impossible for professors to take care of every single student as other liberal arts colleges' professor could. For Dining and Food, I gave a three-star because, though, AC contracts with a food-service provider as some others do, there are liberal arts colleges that make great efforts to facilitate students and the contractor, which is not the case at AC. For Dorms and Housing, I gave a one-star; take it, or you have to experience this yourself. For Health and Safety, I gave a one-star. If health and safety are separate categories, health will get a two-star, and safety would get a one-star. Since they are combined, and to be conservative, I gave a one-star; campus police is unprofessional and does not provide sufficient services.

in terms of academic, it it what you would expect of colleges in this tier. in terms of social life, Sherman is not a exciting place to be. in terms of professors, one third of me is decent and is the case in general. in terms of activities, groups on campus are not well-organized in comparison to other schools. in terms of career service, their counselor tells you to open a LinkedIn account and then you are on your own. in terms of food, school uses a national-chain food service provider, so it is same as most others. in terms of housing, it is possible to get a decent room but it is not easy. in terms of leadership, it is behind.

"liberal arts" college
By oneofroos, From TX
current student. Austin College is not what one would call a true liberal arts college, at the moment to say the least. The college focuses on on-demand majors and allocates excessive resources to them. It is losing its root to put it mildly.

Changed My Life!
By Nicole Class of 2016, From College Station
I'm a proud member of the class of 2016. I remember growing up thinking that I was going to go to a big state school and only went to tour Austin College because my parents forced me to. Immediately when I got to campus I could tell there was something special about it. I took that tour and realized thinking of going there made me feel excited to go to school, which I never felt when touring bigger campuses. I won't pretend it was an easy ride. I entered as a pre-med student and painfully realized that was not for me. I took challenging classes and did things I never would have even imagined as a high school student, like going abroad for a semester working at a charity in London. Most importantly I gained some wonderful mentors and not just the one that I was assigned to my first day. They don't just sit there and sign a form, they have long conversations about life, classes, how you are coping etc. I highly recommend you checking AC out and seeing if it's the right fit for you. If you are someone that wants to establish relationships with professors, not just be one of the hundreds in a lecture hall, or have amazing January Term experiences this might be a great fit for you!
