A Freshman View: The Bad
By Kyle M. Class of 2019, From San Francisco, CA
THE AREA -if you want to do anything fun you have to go outside of Whittier. It's about a 40 minute drive to the Huntington Beach or Downtown LA -Whittier is a casual area with benefits and disadvantages: $5 movie theater days, record & video store. But everything closes at 10pm. -everything is in walking distance but is still pretty far without a car. -there are a lot of sirens and helicopters in the area every week for some reason. THE SOCIAL SCENE -Everyone is pretty chill and nice. Most are from the LA area. -people seem to really enjoy the social scene and the parties. Personally I think they're not the best. It is a small school, with an alright scene. -word travels fast. And if you have a sour relationship with someone you'll most likely see them around and often. -a good amount of people are only here to transfer out ACADEMICS -some classes seem outdated by 20 years. -The buildings are much older but functional. -a good amount of professors are younger, but still great -class engagement is sometimes low. There's normally one kid who answers all the questions in two of my classes. -Note: I can't speak much on the academics because I'm a freshman. DORMS -the dorms for the freshman are a mess. -Freshman live in the dorms where there is no AC and paper thin doors. -the buildings are probably from the 1980s -the WiFi sucks. -the gym and athletics on top of a steep hill, 7 minutes walk from the freshman dorms. FOOD -the cafeteria food is fine. -only other option is the cafe, which has a limited number of items. It's diner food like burgers and chicken tenders or sandwiches. There are a few creative options like tatter tot nachos. Generally it's basic. Overall, most things are average or fine. 7/10. I see more investment in the programs, student events, and financial aid. Because the new administration is only 3 years old feedback is greatly appreciated and easy to give. The president has office hours.

A Freshman View: The Good
By Kyle M, Class of 2023, From San Francisco, California
Personally I think Whittier is a great college. I came from a prestigious college preparatory in San Francisco. In all honesty, I do admit. I was an underachiever in high school. My high school preached an image of equity and inclusion. However the environment was more oriented on elitism. I didn't want to learn because I felt that I couldn't compete. In my experience, Whittier College is a GENUINE, diverse meritocracy. There is no hidden agenda. Which is much of a relief. The learning environment allows for growth and social mobility. There are plentiful opportunities. The real key is putting effort. Everyone I've met is on a hefty financial aid package. The food is good most days. I personally find most people saying otherwise to be overdramatizing. The staff is very kind. In MY experience, professors are compassionate and easily accessible. Classes average about 20 students, at most 30. When school started, I was skipping readings and putting little effort into homework. For personal reasons I decided to put effort into my academics around midterms. All my professors were available for office hours. I was honest with all of them about not trying. Without judgement they taught me strategies to catch up and remain on task. Almost all my professors are younger. They're very qualified, with the added bonus of being connected to the current struggles of a student. There is no disconnect. Without speaking generally, MY professors are great. I think the problems arise from individual students. People who study and manage homework seem to be fine. People who improvise assignments often struggle. Overall, this school is much better then expectations. I'm confident in the college's dedication to the student. I feel fortunate to be here. PS: the health offices are helpful, and the campus safety staff is 10/10.

Campus and facilities are aged
By Prescott 2021, From California
The campus was beautiful yet when you looked deeper you uncovered how poorly mismanaged this school is. What it advertises is not what you get most class were twice the size of what was stated it to be, the food from the CI would act as a bowel cleanse within 30 minutes of consumption. The school lacks spirit or enthusiasm since from talking to everyone who attends you can tell that this is a school full of underachievers. The law school is closing because of lack of funding but I seriously question where the tuition goes because the campus and facilities are not worth the 60 grand a year. As well as the faculty making it almost impossible to live off campus keeping the student population incredibly small with more people leaving the student body everyday. I went from in high school being high achieving to having my spirit broken and feeling worthless and recieved no help from the school even after I requested it. Do not attend this school go to a cc first and then transfer because this school is the worst decision I made.
